Exercise as cardiovascular therapy.

چکیده
For many years, cardiac physicians were strongly influenced by Thomas Hilton’s “Rest and Pain” and advocated prolonged rest for the majority of their patients. However, the past 3 decades have seen a complete revolution in this thinking, and moderate to vigorous exercise is now prescribed not only for the prevention of ischemic heart disease1 but also as a major component of treatment after myocardial infarction,2 angioplasty and coronary bypass surgery, and heart transplantation3 and in congenital heart disease4 and stable congestive heart failure.5,6 This report defines exercise and physical activity, considering their impact on susceptibility to cardiovascular disease. It also examines the physiological effects of regular exercise, suggesting how exercise-induced changes might improve cardiac performance. It discusses the influence of the type, intensity, frequency, duration, and volume of exercise and their respective contributions to the development of a rational exercise prescription, commenting on problems of sustaining compliance and the potential dangers of excessive exercise. A final section of the article suggests possible avenues for future research.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of an 8 week period of aerobic interval training and massage therapy on changes in C-reactive protein (CRP) level and cardiorespiratory fitness in cardiovascular patients after coronary artery bypass graft. The study population consisted of patients who had undergone a coronary artery bypass graft and at least one month had passed since t...
متن کاملSerum Leptin concentration and some cardiovascular risk factors in response to aerobic exercise and weight loss diet in sedentary women
Introduction: Obesity is a complex disorder characterized by accumulation of excess adipose tissue. Discovery of the hormone Leptin is catalyzed the field of obesity research by demonstrating the existence of an afferent hormonal signal from adipose tissue to the central nervous system for regulation of body fat mass. The aim of this study was to assay serum Leptin concentration and some ...
متن کاملThe effect of hormone therapy on bone mineral density and cardiovascular factors among Iranian female athletes with amenorrhea/oligomenorrhea: A randomized clinical trial
Background: Functional hypothalamic menstrual disorder (FHMD) has a destructive effect on the athlete’s bone mineral density and cardiovascular system. Utilizing hormone replacement therapy to treat FHMD in athletes is controversial. This study was conducted to examine the effect of hormone therapy on bone density and the cardiovascular system of professional female athletes with FHMD. ...

Background: Limited studies have evaluated the physical activity, especially the type of exercise, after bariatric surgery. In this study, we aimed to assess the effect of exercise therapy on weight indices and cardiovascular factors in patients who have undergone laparoscopic gastric bypass. Methods: This study is a randomized clinical trial in which 80 obese patients, referring to Obesity Cl...
متن کاملExercise-induced stem cell activation and its implication for cardiovascular and skeletal muscle regeneration.
A number of publications have provided evidence that exercise and physical activity are linked to the activation, mobilization, and differentiation of various types of stem cells. Exercise may improve organ regeneration and function. This review summarizes mechanisms by which exercise contributes to stem cell-induced regeneration in the cardiovascular and the skeletal muscle system. In addition...
متن کاملThe interactive effect of aerobic-resistance training and estrogen therapy on metabolic syndrome indices and omentin-1
Introduction: Obesity and visceral fat accumulation after menopause are associated with insulin resistance and cardiovascular diseases. We investigated the interactive effect of aerobic-resistance training and estrogen replacement therapy on visceral fat, omentin-1 and HOMA-IR in ovariectomized rats. Materials and Methods: Fifty female Wistar rats were ovariectomized (OVX) and divided into 5 gr...
